Yes, Oscar the cat was in the news — AND written up in the New England Journal of Medicine. Confused? He’s my distant cousin (named after me I’m sure) and has unique empathy for humans about to pass in the nursing home in which he lives. Sensing the impending passing, he curls up beside the human, giving them comfort in their last hours.
Caring is one of our great qualities — us cats. I know — I care for my person Dr. Fairfield. If he doesn’t wake up with the alarm to feed me I sit on his chest patiently with my face about an inch away from his until his eyes open — cross eyed trying to figure out why an owl is in his face.
After feeding me I make sure he starts his writing work! You see, I too am a special Oscar.
Plus — as an editor told my person — I blog!!

Hi - it’s me, Oscar. The other morning I was patrolling my person’s back yard and this Fox-with-an-attitude came at me with unseemly intentions. My person had left an opening in the sliding screen door just large enough for me when I’m flat out at 30 mph and the fox hit the screen, then screamed at my person while poking its head through the opening. Couldn’t see it myself from under the bed upstairs but I sure heard my person as he chased the thing away, arms flailing wildly. He sure is brave! Gotta lighten up on my patrolling.
Thanks for all the fan mail! Can’t respond to all due to my sleep requirements. Every time I think about responding I walk smack into a sunbeam on the floor and am forced to stop and snooze. But I appreciate the kind thoughts!
I notice many birds are no longer nesting and have been thinking of what happens when vacations are over. School’s just around the corner. Yeah - I know - it’s only mid July - but count the time left in weeks!
My person says summer’s a great time for many cosmetic procedures - fits in well with time off. By the time Fall rolls around things get really busy and there’s lines waiting to get in. Think about it!
Treat yourself! I do … all the time.
Speaking of treats … I wonder where my person is? He should be making that wonderful can-lid snap noise anytime soon!
Later - and watch out for those Fox days.
